Founder/Baby Sign Language Specialist
My love for American Sign Language started at the University of the Pacific where I studied Theatre Arts and Speech Therapy. During this time, I started teaching my 8 year old brother various signs I was learning in class and noticed how quickly he was picking up the language and how much fun he was having.
Ten years later, when my first son was born, I knew this was something that would not only be a special learning experience for my family, but also a great tool in bridging the communication gap that leads to so much toddler frustration.
With only my old college notes, my husband and I started showing signs to our son.
From an early age, we could tell that he understood what we were saying and signing, but he was not speaking or repeating the signs. I then took the time to learn some new techniques and not only did he start signing frequently, but he began to say the words that were associated with the signs!
I have seen firsthand how sign language can help a child’s speech and vocabulary develop at a faster rate. I cherished the joy and satisfaction I saw in my child’s eyes when he recognized that I understood him. With the birth of our second son in December 2010, I look forward to the journey again and cannot wait to watch his brother sign with him!
I opened my business in 2009 and developed, with a licensed Speech and Language Pathologist, my Hands & Hearts Workshop. My desire is to offer extensive knowledge and tools to other parents struggling and yearning to have improved communication with their babies and toddlers.
I invite you to explore all of the benefits behind signing with hearing babies in the FAQ and Research links of this website and on you own. But please don’t think of this as work; it’s all about making sign language a natural part of your routine and it is so much fun!
